The Bamberg Green man is one of most famous of all Green Men, He is situated under the statue of the Rider. It is primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of growth each spring.
The original piece was carved from dark gray limestone in 1237 by an anonymous medieval stone carver. His watchful gaze peers out from acanthus leaves in the form of a corbel. This carving is one of the supporting brackets for the Bamberg rider, in the nave of the Bamberg Cathedral. To this day, the corbel on the other side has never been carved and the Greenman alone supports the Rider.
