The statue shows King Ramses III carrying a standard surmounted by a ram head, representing the animal sacred to Amun. Such standards were carried in temples and at festivals by the king, when he participated in celebrations, honouring the gods.
The statue has a delicate face and shows the king wearing a short wig, with a cobra on the forehead and a pleated kilt, typical of the New Kingdom Period, which is decorated with a panther head and several cobras.
Ramses the Third was the son and successor of Sethnakht, the founder of the Twentieth Dynasty and was the last of the great pharoahs to rule Egypt. He was Pharoah during the New Kingdom. In the fifth year of his reign he defeated an attack by the Libyans. During his rule the Mediterainian area was in turmoil, due to wars and the fall of Mycenae and crop failures. Great numbers of people were made homeless and desperate. A large group of these people, known as the Sea People had already decimated the Hittite Empire and they were on the move to Egypt, where they were defeated on land and sea by the military skill of Ramses III. The rest of his reign was peaceful and Egypt flourished. Later, one of his minor wives conspired to have Ramses killed, so her son could take the throne. Ramses died before the trial of the conspirators was over and some thought that he had been poisoned. Ramses III had ruled for 31 years and his death marked an end to an era. He was buried in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank at Ancient Thebes.
