This marble effigy is one of the few masterpieces of medieval sculpture that the Museum of Arras preserves.
Behind her discreet smile hides more than one enigma: we do not know indeed who this young person was or whose hand immortalized her so graciously. It is also unknown where this fragment originates.
The location and the author must, however, most probably be sought in Artois, in the midst of artists' studios which the commands of the Countess Mahaut made so flourishing, but which one knows rather badly because of the intense destruction in the region of wich the North has been the victim since the Revolution.
Although there is no serious connection between the two, it has sometimes been attributed to the sculptor Jean Pépin de Huy who made the tomb of Robert d'Artois, son of Mahaut, and a Virgin and Child for the Carthusian monastery in Gosnay, near Bethune.
In the evolution of Sculpture, this one was made at a time of perfect balance between the tendency to the majestic idealization of the XIIIth century and the sinuous mannerism of the second part of the following century. The regularity of the face enclosed in the geometric contour of the veil and the chin strap is softened by the delicately nuanced pattern of the almond eyes, the thin lips and the curls of hair.
The elegance and purity of the style make this piece rather exceptional and one of the most endearing of medieval art.
